Sewanee Herbarium and the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability

When: April 28th 2018, 1:00-3:00 P.M.

Where: The University of the South, Sewanee, Tennessee

Who: The Sewanee Herbarium and the Office of Environmental Stewardship and Sustainability

Why: The campus of the University of the South, more commonly known as Sewanee, is situated on the Cumberland Plateau in SE Tennessee and consists of 13,000 acres, of which 11,800 acres is undeveloped, natural land. A large portion of this land is part of the Jump-off Community Land Trust (JCLT) and the South Cumberland Regional Land Trust (SCRLT). The campus, called The Domain by many, contains numerous species of native plants and trees that are susceptible to competition from invasive species. The removal and control of these invasives is key to the retention of biodiversity on campus. The biodiversity and vast quantity of undeveloped land on campus provides ample opportunities for research and learning. For more information about Sewanee and The Domain, please visit http://www.sewanee.edu

Details: We will be removing Chinese Privet (Ligustrum sinense) and Oriental Bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus) along the stream behind the Green House on Mitchell Ave. Please bring gloves and wear clothes that can get dirty. Avoid open-toed shoes.

The Weed Wrangle® started by The Garden Club of Nashville in 2015, expanded to the Knoxville Garden Club, Garden Club of Lookout Mountain, Memphis Garden Club, and The Little Garden Club of Memphis in 2016. All clubs are members of The Garden Club of America and participants in the GCA Partners for Plants program.
